I simply adore making Pokemon crafts, and specifically, Pokeball shaped things. I was therefore inspired by some classic candy making techniques, to make some Pokemon sugar cookies as a fun food craft.
Sugar cookie dough is great to work with since it can be shaped without changing the consistency too much. And while these cookies may look like they have a lot of steps, they’re actually relatively simple to make thanks to the simple shape of the Pokeball.
You can pair them with some Pokeball Rice Krispie treats!

Instructions to Make Pokemon Cookies
To make these Pokeball cookies, you first start with basic sugar cookie dough. Then color and shape the dough into a log and cut them. Therefore I’m going to break down each step, starting with making the basic sugar cookie dough.
How to Make the Pokemon Sugar Cookie Dough
Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set it aside.
In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar.
Use a paddle attachment if using a stand mixer.
Add the vanilla extract and eggs. Mix in the eggs one at a time.
Tip: Be sure to use a spatula to wipe the edges of the bowl so everything is evenly incorporated.
Carefully mix in the flour. Make sure it doesn’t go everywhere! Do this by starting on a low setting.
Mix until just incorporated (see the second image).
Divide and Color the Cookie Dough
Dust your surface with flour.
Divide the dough in half. Shape that half into a flat circle.
Then wrap it in plastic wrap and place it into the fridge.
Break off about a third of the other half and set it aside.
Add several drops of red food coloring to the larger section.
Mix in the food coloring by folding the dough over and kneading it several times.
Tip: You may want to wear gloves for this as the food coloring can sometimes go everywhere and stain your skin.
Once it’s the color you’d like, shape it into a disc and wrap it in plastic wrap. Then place it into the fridge.
Lastly, add black food coloring to the smallest section.
Since I used gel food coloring, I dipped a toothpick into the food coloring and wiped it on the cookie dough.
Kneed the food coloring in. Then again, shape it into a disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and place it into the fridge.
Shaping the Pokemon Cookies
After the sugar cookie dough has completely cooled, break off a piece of the plain dough and roll it into a log.
Then break off a section of the black dough and roll it into a thin rectangle that’s the same length of the log.
The shorter measurement should be just big enough to wrap around the log.
Tip: You can be more methodical about this and measure the circumference of the log. Then shape the rectangle to that equal that measurement.
Brush off any extra flour. Then use the pastry brush to paint on some water onto the dough.
Then wrap it around the white log.
Measure the length and circumference of the log. Then wrap it in plastic wrap and put it into the fridge.
Next, form identical rectangles out of the red and white dough. Make sure it’s the same length as the log you just made.
Then make two skinner rectangles out of the black. These will form the stripe around the Pokeball.
Wipe them both with water and attach them to the sides of the white dough.
Then wipe one side of red dough and attach it to one of the black stripes.
Make sure the height of all of the stripes together are roughly the circumference of the black log.
Then wrap it up and put in the fridge.
Once hardened, roll it out a bit so it connects all of the colors and is taller than the circumference of the black log.
Brush it with water.
Then wrap it around the black log.
Be careful with this part to make sure the dough doesn’t break and crack.
Though if it does, simply mush it back together.
Use your fingers to connect the ends around the log and then roll it so it’s all one uniform log.
Cutting and Baking the Pokemon Cookies
Then either cool the log one more time to harden or go ahead and cut them. I like to cut roughly 1/2 inch cookies.
If you don’t cool the log first you may need to reshape them a bit to form a nice even Pokeball cookie.
Place the Pokemon sugar cookies onto a baking tray lined with either parchment paper or silicone mat.
Depending on the size of cookie you cut, they’ll bake for 10-30 minutes.

Place your freshly baked Pokemon cookies on a cooling rack to cool.
You may need to bake your pokeball cookies in batches, depending on how much oven space you have.
If that’s the case, wrap the dough in plastic wrap and place it in the fridge while the Pokemon cookies bake.
Then take it out and cut new cookies when you’re ready for another batch.
It’s just so fun to cut into the log and see the beautiful Pokeball shape!
