Instructions to Make a Candy Corn Tie Dye Shirt
Before doing anything, make sure to wash the shirt to remove any chemicals or anything else that may prevent the dye from setting properly. This will help you get the most vibrant color. You can then take the shirt directly out of the wash as you’ll want it wet.
Prepare the Candy Corn Tie Dye Design
I forgot to do this, but you’ll want to start with a wet shirt. Then fold the shirt in half and draw a half of a candy corn using a washable marker. This is really just half of a long triangle with rounded corners. You can also use the free printable template to make it easier.
Then to help add the dye in the right places, draw two lines across the triangle. (You’ll see I drew a couple because I kept changing the placement of where I wanted them).
Tip: Even though I didn’t do it in the photo, I recommend using a yellow washable marker to mark the line towards the top. Candy corns are orange on the bottom, then yellow, and then white. So if you use a yellow marker for the top line, you’ll be able to see where to place the yellow.
After you’ve drawn your design, start at one end of the outline and accordion fold the shirt on the line. Be sure to keep the line of the fold straight – the rest of the shirt will bend and twist to make sure the line stays straight.
Tie the Shirt for the Candy Corn Tie Dye Design
Wrap a rubber band across the line to secure all the folds in place.
Since I forgot to wet the shirt before drawing the candy corn design, I took the opportunity to wet it at this step. I then placed a tighter rubber band around it.
(Wetting the shirt allows the folds to be closer together, making the tie dye design more defined)
Wrap rubber bands or zip ties around the rest of the shirt, spacing them apart by a couple inches.
After it’s all wrapped up, soak it in a solution of soda ash and water. You want to mix 1 cup of soda ash with 1 gallon of water until it’s all dissolved.
(I’ll admit, this isn’t actually the candy corn tie dye shirt, this one is actually the tie dye bat shirt. But I promise, this one went into the tub right after!) I made all of the Halloween shirts the same day.
Add Dye to the Candy Corn Tie Dye Shirt
Cover the table with plastic wrap and put on the gloves.
Start with the orange dye. If the tie dye kit you use doesn’t have orange, you can easily make some by mixing yellow and red. I personally like to use old yogurt cups to mix the dyes. To make the orange a little darker, you can add a couple drops of black.
Then squeeze or pour a small amount of the orange dye onto the bottom of the candy corn section. Look for the lines you drew and keep it under the line – it will be at a slight angle.
Then add yellow dye above the orange. Again, add the dye only in the section marked off. Be careful not to let the dye drip above the line so that section can stay white.
Dye the rest of the shirt black. Again, be careful to not get it into the orange, yellow, and white section.
I accidentally got a couple drops of black on the candy corn, but quickly took a paper towel to try and blot it off.
Wipe the plastic with the paper towels to make sure the dye doesn’t go where you don’t want it to.
Wrap it in the plastic and let it set for at least 6 hours, but I recommend giving it a full 24 hours.
Once the dye is set, rinse it under water and remove the rubber bands or zip ties. Let it rinse until the water runs clear, then wash it in the washing machine with other dyed clothing. Put in the dryer and then your candy corn tie dye shirt is ready to wear!
